In a bid to promote public health, Masvingo city council has banned the sale and purchase of uninspected meat.
In a statement, the local authority said butcheries who will be found selling uninspected meat will have their licenses revoked.
“The City of Masvingo is urging all residents and meat vendors to strictly comply with Statutory Instrument 50 of 1995, which prohibits the sale and purchase of uninspected meat, ” read the statement.
“Selling or consuming meat that has not been inspected by qualified meat inspectors is a serious health risk and is punishable by law.
“Any person found selling uninspected meat will have the meat immediately condemned and destroyed.
“Offending butcheries risk having their operating licences revoked.”
The local authority warned or serious health repercussions over consuming the meat.
“Consumers are warned that eating uninspected meat can lead to serious illnesses, including food poisoning, tapeworms, and other life-threatening infections.
Always ensure your meat comes from a licensed and inspected outlet.”
