The mayor of Harare, Cllr Jacob Mafume, says the City will install a 100-megawatt solar plant by the end of 2026.

Mayor Mafume said this during a workshop between the City Council and Amali Data Management teams in Harare recently.

This initiative by the City is a significant step towards harnessing renewable energy and promoting sustainability in Harare.

The solar plant is expected to contribute to the city’s energy needs, reducing reliance on non-renewable sources and mitigating environmental impacts.

“We have set-up the technical team and identified the land where the power plant will be stationed,” said Mayor Mafume.

He said the solar plant is going to be stationed near a substation which is budget friendly.

Mayor Mafume said the City is open to collaborations with organizations that support the Mayoral legacy goal.

“I believe that we have a generic resolution that we have passed that anyone who is willing to partner with us on solar we will quickly agree to their proposals that are coming,” he said.

He further explained that the project will operate under a public-private partnership (PPP) model for faster execution, with a phased rollout pending regulatory approvals.

Mayor Mafume expressed confidence that once financing and legal frameworks are finalized, construction will begin swiftly, marking a critical step towards Harare’s energy independence.

Mayor Mafume emphasised that the City is very much committed to the power plant project.
