The Passenger Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has welcomed the government’s initiative through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development to procure breathalyzers for use at roadblocks. PAZ National Coordinator Tafadzwa Goliati said the move is a significant step towards enhancing road safety and reducing the alarming number of accidents caused by reckless and drunk driving.

“We commend Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona for emphasizing the importance of sustained road safety awareness campaigns. Educating drivers, enhancing infrastructure, and advocating for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations are crucial in promoting a culture of road safety, “Goliati said.

He said road accidents statistics are alarming, with 2,099 people killed and 9,955 injured in 51,924 road accidents recorded in 2023. He urged PAZ members and the general public to take responsibility for road safety by reporting reckless driving and following traffic regulations.

PAZ also acknowledged government’s efforts to implement other measures to improve road safety, including stricter licensing requirements and the installation of speed limiting devices. He said the measures demonstrate the government’s commitment to reducing road crashes and promoting a safer transportation system.

Goliati said most notably, as PAZ they are pleased that the government has listened to their plea and lobbying efforts, which have been instrumental in bringing about the positive change. He said as PAZ, they will continue to work with the government and other stakeholders to promote road safety awareness and advocate for policies that prioritize the safety and well-being of passengers and road users.
