The introduction of the Zig currency, a year ago has had some adverse implications on the workers resulting in them struggling to make ends meet.
This was said by ZCTU deputy Secretary General, Runesu Dzimiri, while giving his opinion on the Zig currency.
“The introduction of the ZiG currency has had significant implications for workers’ conditions in Zimbabwe,”said Dzimiri.
“The erosion of purchasing power, economic instability, and a lack of trust in government authorities have created a precarious situation for many workers.
” The rapid depreciation of the ZiG has led to a drastic loss in the value of salaries, making it increasingly difficult for workers to meet their basic needs amid rising prices,” he said.
Dzimiri said the current economic environment has created an atmosphere of uncertainty for workers, some of whom have been retrenched.
“The ongoing economic instability, characterized by high inflation rates and a lack of confidence in the currency, has created an environment of uncertainty for workers,he said.
Dzimiri said the Zig currency has struggled to stay afloat as most busineses are opting to use the US dollar in their business transactions.
“Many businesses continue to operate in U.S. dollars, which are perceived as more stable, leaving the ZiG struggling to gain traction. This dual-currency system complicates financial planning for workers and employers alike, as fluctuations in currency value can directly impact wages and job security.”
