How did Henry Mhungu, who was pinned against a wall by a lorry on Saturday, manage to escape certain death?

Henry, who is a dump truck operator at Mupfuti Mine at Zimplats, was relaxing at a shop around midday when the lorry accelerated towards the bench where he was sitting.

The lorry pushed against the wall.

“The driver, instead of applying brakes, accelerated towards the wall of the shop where the victim was sitting only to stop after hitting the guy and pinning him against the wall,” said Fatso, one of the eyewitnesses.

His friend, Simon Musa, said:

“We were together seconds before the accident, I just got up to get into the shop to buy some beers just two steps from him and boom the accident happened.

“I was lucky, it could have been three of us because it was me, Henry, and Janyure at the same bench.

“I was a few metres away from the scene and I came here rushing only to find some people busy taking videos and pictures instead of helping him.

“Me and my friend then started doing first aid to Henry and it’s sad that some people were taking pictures whilst someone was bleeding, it’s pathetic.”

Police later attended the scene.

The shop was damaged due to the impact. Henry was quickly ferried to a nearby hospital before being transported to Harare for further assessment and treatment.
