The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has called on government to fully make provisions of funding basic education and provide adequate support to vulnerable families who cannot afford paying for school fees.
Said ARTUZ:
“ARTUZ is deeply alarmed by the staggering number of students—over 2.7 million—who are unable to access education due to poverty. This is a direct consequence of the government’s failure to fully fund basic education and provide adequate support to vulnerable families”.
“The high cost of examination fees, coupled with other school-related expenses, further exacerbates this crisis, pushing more children out of the education system,”added ARTUZ.
ARTUZ urged government to ensure that no child is denied basic right to education.
“The government’s failure to address this issue is a violation of Section 75 of the Constitution, which guarantees every child the right to education.
“ARTUZ calls for immediate action to ensure that no child is denied access to education due to poverty.
The government must fully fund basic education in line with Section 75 of the Constitution, which guarantees every child the right to education. Partial subsidies and shifting the burden onto parents are unacceptable.
“The fact that over 2.7 million students are unable to access education due to poverty is a national crisis that demands urgent attention. ARTUZ urges the government to prioritize education funding and implement policies that ensure every child has access to quality education, regardless of their socioeconomic background.”
