The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) said while it welcomes Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)’s ongoing operation , dubbed No to Mushikashika, law enforcement agents must however be fair and transparent in their duties.
This was revealed by PAZ national coordinator, Tafadzwa Goliati.
“The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) fully supports the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s (ZRP) ongoing operation to curb lawlessness on the country’s roads. This operation, dubbed “No to Mushikashika, Pirate Taxis and Lawlessness on the Roads,” is a crucial step towards promoting road safety and maintaining law and order.
“We urge the police to exercise fairness and transparency in their operations, ensuring that motorists are aware of the specific offenses being targeted. These offenses include: causing congestion, picking and dropping passengers at undesignated points, creating imaginary lanes, driving against the flow of traffic (one-way) , operating as Public Service Vehicles without relevant permits, route authority, and vehicle fitness,” said Goliati.
Goliati implored motorists to abide to cooperate with law enforcement officers.
“We also remind motorists that bribery will not be tolerated, and those who attempt to bribe police officers will face stern action. PAZ encourages all motorists to cooperate with the police and drive responsibly, promoting a safer and more orderly road environment for everyone.
“This operation aims to protect passengers’ rights, safety, and innocent road users who are vulnerable to robberies and accidents, such as hit-and-run incidents. Unfortunately, passengers are being robbed by illegal private taxis every day.
“Compliant transport operators must be protected because they are paying tax to the government. We urge the authorities to ensure that these operators are not unfairly targeted during the operation,” he added.
ZRP recently launched the operation in a bid to bring lawness and order in the country’s roads.
