The Consumer Protection Commission has busted a syndicate that was selling underweight sugar in Bindura supplying to other parts of the country, resulting in consumers being short changed.
“The Consumer Protection Commission wants to inform members of the public that it busted a syndicate of unscrupulous businesses in Mashonaland Central province in Bindura Central Business District who were caught repackaging low quality under weight sugar into fasely labelled 2 kgs when it is 1,6 kgs under the label, Star brand and sugar pack, thereby deceiving and short changing customers,”said the Commission.
“These despicable pseudo business persons
were caught during the ongoing cabinet directed operation/ blitz against business malpractice where the Commission conducted inspections in collaboration with the ministry of Industry and Commerce, Trade Measures department, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Ministry of Health and Child Care,”added the Commission.
According to investigations, the syndicate was a major supplier of underpackaged sugar in the country.
“Preliminary intelligence information indicates that this business is a major supplier of illegally repackaged sugar in the country.The shop was subsequently closed, the sugar confiscated and legal proceedings have been initiated against them. So far during the ongoing operation, over 90 unscrupulous businesses were prosecuted and those found guilty of serious offences have been taken to court to answer their charges.”
Under section 10 of the Consumer Protection Act (14:44) it is an offence for suppliers to sell or market any goods and services unless they meet the mandatory safety and quality standards as prescribed by the law.
