ZCTU acting Secretary General…Runesu Dzimiri

Following an accident that occurred at Mbudzi Interchange earlier this week where a construction worker lost his life, the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has expressed concerned over the spate of accidents at workplaces in the country and has called for precautionary measures aimed at promoting health and safety to be taken.
In a statement, the acting ZCTU Secretary General, Runesu Dzimiri said:
“We express our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased worker and reiterate that no employee should be a fatality statistic at the work place.
The accident underscores the critical importance of safety protocols and equipment maintenance in construction environments.”
Dzimiri implored companies in the construction industry to ensure safety measures and also embark on safety trainings for workforce.
“It is vital for companies in the construction industry to continually evaluate their safety practices and invest in trainings for their employees to eliminate workplace accidents.This tragedy serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure that all safety measures are in place,”said Dzimiri.
He urged that there must be thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crane collapse, hold accountable those responsible and ensure strict adherence to Occupational Safety Health standards at the work place in future.
“The current state of occupational safety and health in our work establishments is concerning.National accident statistics are alarming with high fatality rates.The National Social Security Authority (NSSA) is called upon to ensure strict enforcement measures by conducting thorough workplace inspections,”he said.
A construction worker died at Mbudzi Interchange on Monday after a crane which was being dismantled collapsed.
