Harare businessmen Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu have been sentenced to 12 and 15 years respectively after being found guilty of fraud.

High Court Justice Pisirayi Kwenda handed out the sentence in Harare on Monday.

The Court found that the accused engaged in aggravating fraud and the sentencing guidelines said they would start at 20 years. This was premised on the significant amount of money involved and the misuse of public funds.

Mpofu was sentenced to 25 years, while Chimombe got 20 years.

Both were given 27 months credited for time spent in incarceration during trial.

So the final sentencing is:

Moses Mpofu – 22 years (three years suspended for five years for good behaviour and a further four years on condition of restitution) – effective 15 years
Mike Chimombe – 17 years (three years for five years for good behaviour, two years suspended for restitution) – effective 12 years
They both plan to appeal against conviction and sentencing.
